I'd also remove ssj3 from existence. I think it's silly and have ssj2 remain Gohan's hidden power. Goku and Vegeta would remain ssj but still be a lot more powerful than they were during Cell. I'd scale back some of the ridiculous gaps in power that pop up as soon as Gotenks appears.
I agree.
My idea was based on keeping SSJ3, but I also like the idea of scaling back power levels, and having SSJ2 solely remain Gohan's Hidden Power, and keep Goku and Vegeta at MSSJ.
And personally I'd have Goten not exist, but keep Trunks and not introduce any Fusion stuff.

If Akira still went down the route of having Vegeta and Goku fight each other, Goku could have had some new techniques from otherworld, like Kaioken or Spit Bomb, or something else... something unique.

Or they could still have SSJ3 but introduce it as something else.

Have MSSJ for all three, Gohan, Goku and Vegeta.
But instead of SSJ3 being the transformation that comes after SSJ2, make it so SSJ3 is something SSJ's can unlock.

Think of a tree, there's SSJ, then down one branch is SSJ2 and down another separate branch is SSJ3.
Keep SSJ2 unique to Gohan as MSSJ+Hidden Power Controlled, and have Goku possess which we currently know as SSJ3, which could be like SSJ+Tapping into Oozaru Power.
And to keep SSJ2 unique looking, SSJ3 would have the same aura as SSJ/MSSJ, except with the addition of long hair, brow bone change and such.

So what Gohan has would seem more like a purely Ki related power, in that it's still just the SSJ transformation, just incredibly powered up in relation to Ki as shown by the Aura.
While what Goku would have could be more of a Transformation power, in that the Aura will stay mostly the same, but there are evident physical changes to the hair and face.
